Prior to the blight in the early 20th century which virtually exterminated the American Chestnut tree in North America, this wood was preferred for cabinetry, architectural millwork and flooring. During the 18th and 19th centuries, American Chestnut was often locally hewn or sawn into timbers & boards to construct barns and houses. Wood harvested and milled prior to the blight in the early 1900's exhibits mainly clear grain. Chestnut trees that were infected by the blight and remained standing in our forests were subject to insect infestation resulting in what is commonly referred to as Wormy Chestnut.Reclaimed Antique Chestnut will have natural color variation due in part to local growing conditions and in part to exposure, or lack thereof, to the elements once it was remilled into timbers or boards.
We offer Chestnut in 4/4 (one inch thick) rough sawn, random width & length, off-the-saw grade lumber, or as beamery or flooring. All orders are considered custom as we do not generally maintain an "off-the-shelf" inventory. Pre-ordering is essential for American Chestnut products.

Barn siding has become increasingly popular for use in both exterior and interior residential & commercial design applications. Reclaimed siding will exhibit varying degrees of weathering and coloration depending on its exposure to the elements over decades of time. Color generally will vary from silvery-grey to dark brown, or may contain traces of old paint. Widths may be random from 6 inches to 14 inches; generally averaging 8 to 12 inches. Lengths are random ranging from 4 feet up to 20 feet; generally averaging 8 to 14 feet. All our siding is dry, straight, sound, denailed and end trimmed where needed. Additionally, we can provide unweathered interior barn (granary) boards. In weathered barn siding we can supply softwood in Pine/Hemlock or hardwood in oak/beech/poplar, and granary boards made from Northern Yellow Pine, White Pine, and Hemlock (all orders pending availability). We can process wholesale orders from 500 square feet to trailer loads depending on your need.
We encourage the use of Eastern Hemlock posts, beams & timbers for aesthetic applications Reclaimed hand hewn and/or original sawn barn timbers in Oak, Elm, Maple, White Pine & Hemlock.
