Antique Chestnut Blanks and Flooring
Prior to the blight in the early 20th century - which virtually exterminated the American Chestnut tree in the North America - this wood was preferred and used extensively for architectural millwork & flooring. Even earlier in our country's development, during the 18th & 19th century, American Chestnut was locally hewn or sawn into timbers and boards to construct houses and barns.
Chestnut trees that were harvested & milled prior
to the early 1900's, before the blight, produced wood
that remains to this day essentially clear.
Chestnut trees that were killed by the blight
and remained standing in the forest were
subject to insect infestation resulting in what
is commonly referred to as Wormy Chestnut.
Reclaimed antique chestnut will have color variation
depending, in part, on what form it was originally
milled into, such as granary boards as opposed to
barn beams or threshing floor, as well as natural
hues influenced by local forest growing conditions.
All of our antique chestnut rough sawn dimension blanks and/or tongue & grrove flooring are custom made for our customers. We do not maintain an "off-the-shelf inventory" of pre-made chestnut products. Remember, there is only a finite amount of American Chestnut - which is becoming increasing scarse. Unlike mass produced modern lumber and flooring our antique wood products are carefully crafted just for you. Pre-ordering is essential. Contact us to discuss your upcoming chestnut projects.
